Freebie Round-up (UK)

Hiya, I said yesterday that I'd do a quick post on various freebies and offers I've come across recently - there are all sorts of websites out there which will round these up, but some are clearly just out there to harvest your details so I've only included the ones I personally think are worth it. [Apologies if you're not in the UK.].

Magazine Free Gifts
These have come a long way since my magazine buying heyday  when all that was ever given away on the front cover seemed to be some plasticy smelling perma-creased tote bag, but one would hope so, given that the average glossy mag seems to cost the best part of a fiver these days. And I do not count a John Lewis catalogue as a 'free gift' - you know who you are, certain interiors magazines! On the stands at the moment is a particularly good selection of beauty products, so worth buying even if you wouldn't normally fork out for the magazine.

Glamour - only £2, and you get a full size Percy & Reed shampoo, conditioner, volumising oil (whatever that is) or shine stuff. I got the shampoo, I like to change what I use occasionally.

Cosmopolitan - Not full size, but probably luxury sample size. Elemis is pricey, and I needed moisturiser. They have a regular one, a mattifying one or a lip treatment on offer. Cosmo costs £3.50.

Marie Claire - Full size Neal's Yard handcream worth £10. Well worth getting. Bargain.

Also offering hand cream is Good Housekeeping, this time by Balance Me and again worth £10. The magazine costs £3.90

Mollie Makes has a free 'make it yourself' cover-mount every issue, and costs £4.99. This month the gift is an oilcloth coin purse. If you like the cross-stitch I showed yesterday, that kit is still available on the current issue of Cross Stitcher, which costs £3.99.

I quite like a read of Ideal Home occasionally - especially now our move is confirmed, hurrah - so although I wouldn't buy the magazine just for the silicon spatula, it's a better read than a lot of the interiors mags so worth picking up if you need an extra dose of house porn. And those spatulas are the best at making sure all your cake mix goes into the tin. £3.50.

I also spotted this Let's Grow Veg magazine - which costs £7.99 but claims to have your 'complete start-up kit for 2013 worth £72'. I don't know about that, but it does contain 10 packets of seed, so even assuming they're as little as 99p each, you'd still get two packets free, plus the magazine. The seeds are Courgette, Beetroot, Radish, Chilli, Tomato, Salad, Rocket, Leek, Carrot and Kale.
Edit: I've just checked here and the seeds are worth £17.62. The other offers are 'free item but pay postage' where you can claim strawberry plants, potatoes, bird feeders etc.

Free Copy of InStyle Magazine
Don't want to fork out for a magazine at all? Get a free copy of InStyle by entering your details at this link. They'll ring you back to get your address, and probably offer you a further 3 issues for £1. You can take this up or not, as you prefer. I think it's usually £3.80 an issue.

Free H&M Voucher
If you fancy an high street shopping splurge, why not assuage your guilt by dropping off a carrier bag of second hand clothes at H&M? You can donate garments for adults or kids, and they don't even have to be wearable quality - ripped or stained (washed though) is fine as it will be sorted for rags. In return you get a £5 voucher off a £30 spend for each bag you donate - valid til the end of June. [Yes, these are new jeans, ahem]

Free Cat and a Cup of Tea
OK, not really a free cat. But the furry devils cost a fortune don't they? All that feeding and de-fleaing and outrageous vet bills. Purina Go-Cat are giving away 185,000 samples of their latest Crunchy and Tender cat food if you fill in your details here. You're a blogger, you're bound to either have a cat or want a cat. If not, hand over your ipad now. On the same note, Twinings are giving away free samples of their tea - you can choose any two from a choice of eight by going to their Facebook app here and filling in your address.

*******

Hope some of these are useful to you - have you got any good freebies to add? I haven't listed competitions as you are obviously not guaranteed to win those - even if they have a ton of prizes - but if you want some tips you might want to see my posts from a couple of years ago here and here.

A room of one's own. Plus Giveaway. Because life is better with craft supplies and stationery.

Thanks for your comments on my blogiversary post yesterday. You're all very kind, and yes sometimes I over think things. Who'd have thunk?

I've been a bit slack on the blogging front recently, mainly because I've been tired. [This stupid get fit and get thin thing takes up loads of time and it's borrrring.] I have other things to do as well - like write a review of my friend's book,* and I've put pressure on myself to do it properly. As a result, I'm doing a virtual 'lalala can't hear you' and haven't started it. However - we're in the process of buying a house, AGAIN - and  naturally THINGS WILL BE DIFFERENT. Because I will have.. an office**. A creative hub. An oasis of learning. A room of one's own, as insisted on by Virginia Woolf. Of course, it's highly probable that I will be just the same, and spend more time on Pinterest drooling over pictures of desks and world maps and pen pots than I will actually writing. But that's the fun bit, right? [And yes, I'm well aware that I should be perfectly capable of tapping out a best selling novel / earth shatteringly popular blog at the kitchen table. In between my volunteer work and raising triplets single-handed. And like, baking and stuff.]

desk space...good karma

desk space - photos

Love this desk space! And I especially love the brightly colored chair

Post-it note table for doodles and designs
Just rip it off and start again when you're done!

Anyway, as everyone knows, the best thing about a new job, new term at college or fictional office is the stationery buying opportunities this presents. I was in Tiger at the weekend - and as ever, managed to fill a basket with stuff I didn't know I needed. If you don't yet have a branch in your town, they're a Danish company, and are kind of like the love-child of Muji and Ikea marketplace. They're especially good for crafty bits and pieces - beads, crochet hooks, 15 metres of satin ribbon for a quid - big packets of spices, random Scandinavian snacks and stationery. They have notebooks of all sizes, cards and postcards, hipster beloved sticky tape with moustaches on it, sketch books with a pre-printed 'frame' on each page, speech bubble post-it notes...

Lamps £8 each

Parcel tape 2 for £1

Bull pen and post-it holder £2

Origami/crafting paper £1 a packet

I bought a waste-paper bin made from recycled Japanese magazines for £4, and everyone needs paper-clips shaped like bicycles, right?

Bike clips 4 for £1

So, because I got a bit carried away - and to celebrate two years of blogging, I have a little parcel of goodies to give away.

  • Pack of pretty crafting papers
  • Speech bubble post-it notes - perfect for adding to photos of friends
  • Bicycle paper clips
  • A mini glue-gun complete with 3 glue sticks
  • Pack of Dutch waffles. Sustenance is important for inspiration. [Unless I've eaten them as well as my own packet. Yum]

So, to enter - please use the widget below and tell me in the comments what kind of 'room of your own' you'd like for yourself. Or have already claimed for yourself, if you're that lucky. Somewhere to write? Craft room? Gorgeous airy studio? Dressing room? Library? Frankly I'd like all of these and require a mansion to facilitate it. Oh, and be a follower of the blog. It's only polite. Any other follows/tweets purely optional. Open worldwide.

PS. While we're on the subject of stationery, I really have to show you these gorgeous notecards that the beautiful and fragrant Kylie sent me recently. She's made them out of a vintage ladybird book and I can't tell you how much I love them. Isn't she a genius?

Peter and Jane always wrote their thank you notes

Thank you Kylie.

Ta-dah! Tuesday - Cox & Cox Christmas Giveaway - Heart Decorations

Hi - it's nearly December, and whilst a chill of fear trickles down the back of my neck at the thought of all the Christmas shopping I still have to do, there is the advantage that soon I'll be able to get all my decorations and ornaments out. And speaking of which, I recently found a pair of these lovely Cox & Cox antiqued glass hanging hearts - boxed and perfect as a present [yeah yeah] or to keep for yourself. And cos I'm nice like that, I'm giving them away. They come with velvet ribbon already attached and the RRP is £10.50.

To enter, please  use the Rafflecopter widget. Giveaway open worldwide and I will do my best to wrap the the box in extra bubblewrap! You must be a follower of the blog to enter - any other follows are entirely optional.

I have put the Ta-dah! Tuesday link up as well as I have everyone to visit, but my laptop is still ropey so it may take me a while to get around to commenting on your post, but I always do. The link up is separate from the giveaway. Hope everyone's well.

Ta-dah! Tuesday - Nails inc goody bag giveaway!

Hey hey. I haven't forgotten you all, honest. I'm feeling a lot better now, but even in the midst of feeling grotty I did haul my bones out once last week. Nails inc got in touch with me and asked me to go along to a consumer focus group they were having at their head office. All I had to do was have a free manicure treatment beforehand, then talk about nails for a couple of hours. Plus, cash and goody bag were promised, so obviously I'd have to be at death's door to have turned that down.

Anyway, because I'm the caring, sharing type, and to say thanks to everyone who's stuck with the blog for a while - plus hello to new followers - I have a goody bag of my own to give away.

Kensington Caviar speed dry top coat - new
'Tate' - red nail polish - new
Crackle effect 'Hoxton' and 'Camden' polishes in purple and turquoise - new
Mustard nail polish 'Hampstead Gardens' - used once - I love this colour but it doesn't suit me so have chucked it in as an extra.
Prize value approximately £50.

I'm trying out a new way of running competitions as this way means I don't have to scribble on little bits of paper! Hopefully the Rafflecopter widget will make things easier. [There is no obligation to enter more than one way]. I haven't tried it before though so let me know if it doesn't work! Usual rules apply - open worldwide but for blog followers only. ***NOW CLOSED***WINNER HERE****

Ta-dah! Tuesday - Gemmipop Designs Giveaway

What do you think of my new brooch? I bought it from the lovely Gemma at Gemmipop Designs on Etsy, who I discovered via our respective blogs. I love how she's brought the traditional cameo design right up to date, and the fact that it kind of looks like me when I have my hair back.

I went for white because I knew immediately which jacket I'd wear it on, but cameo lady is also available in loads of other shades. She's made from acrylic and costs £6.00.

Gemma also uses her laser cutter to create lots of cute animal brooches, as well as necklaces, earrings and cufflinks. Here's a few of my picks from her shop:

Happily, Gemma has offered one follower of Faith Hope and Charity Shopping £10.00 to spend on pretties from her shop - yay!

The giveaway is open to all followers of my blog - UK and overseas. All you need to do is visit Gemmipop Designs and then leave a comment on this post saying which your favourite item is. Please also state how you follow FHCS and make sure you leave a way for me to contact you.

For an extra entry you can follow me and Gemma on Twitter, also tweeting I've entered to win @gemmipopdesigns jewellery with @FHCShopping http://tinyurl.com/btbum2o

Alternatively you can gain an extra entry by blogging about the giveaway or putting the following badge on your blog.

I will draw a winner on 5th August. Good luck!

Do link up your ta-dahs as usual, that's if you've done anything other than eat '99s now that the Summer has finally made an appearance. [I'd really appreciate it if you'd please link back to this post if you do add your own.]

...and I couldn't even have a glass of wine!

Wow, thanks so much for all your replies on my blogger quiz - that was the most popular post in a while!

If you enjoyed that post, I wonder if I could ask you again to vote for me? Thanks to your nominations, Faith Hope and Charity Shopping has actually made the short-list for a BritMums 'BiB' Award [Brilliance in Blogging - their words not mine] - in the 'LAUGH' category - and well, it would be pretty cool to be in the finals. I don't have a gazillion twitter followers and very few people in my day to day life know about the blog, so if you could take the time to vote I'd really appreciate it. It's very quick and you don't need to enter any personal details - just tick the box and submit. You'll need to scroll down to the 'LAUGH' category, it's the 11th award. Thanks!

It's been another busy week with Boy2's birthday and party this time. When I gave up alcohol for Lent I had somehow failed to consider the fact that it encompasses both children's birthdays. Won't be making that mistake again! Neither will I inflict more of my cake making efforts on you here, but if you do want to see what my attempt at a pirate treasure chest looked like then there are pictures on my Facebook page. And for those of you who follow my blog page on FB - have you seen the competition I've got running at the moment? You can win a copy of  Junk for Joy by Sian Berry - with all kinds of makeover and upcycling ideas, perfect for Spring.

Hope you're all enjoying the sunshine.
Thanks in advance for any votes - I won't be boring about it, honest.

EDIT: At the risk of being really tedious and completely negating my last sentence I have just discovered from Twitter that I have been nominated for 'Blog of the Year' in the MADs as well. I have no idea how this works, I think I would need lots more nominations for the remotest chance at this one but as there is actual MONEY and a holiday up for grabs I suppose I should at least mention it :-)

I will put a badge on the sidebar, and if you feel like clicking then please do and I will love you always. (I thought this one was really for child-centric blogs only, but it appears that my occasional sarcastic mention of the offspring and my dire birthday cake efforts loving words about the children may actually count for something. Why are there no awards specifically for snark and sporadic charity shop treasure? Perhaps I will start one. Who's with me?

Giveaway winner...

Hello and apologies for my absence this week, have been busy with the kids and also trying to sell our house and buy a new one in a completely different area. So far I have been reminded that estate agents lie through their teeth -"You can't hear the road inside" means "The roar of the M25 is deafening from the garden" - and been surprised to discover that some people don't think to remove the 'erotic' nudey pictures of their very much younger Filipina wife before the viewers come round. I thought the one of her in the hallway where she was wearing only a t-shirt was a little risqué, and that was before I spotted the naked photograph of her on all fours which was proudly framed on the dressing table. Strangely I couldn't concentrate on the fitted wardrobes after that.

Anyway, just popping in to announce the winner of the Stall 21 giveaway. Congratulations to...Bex Smith! Can you please email me your details and I will pass them on to Stall 21.

Back to regular posts soon I hope!

300 followers - and a giveaway you can all enter!

Hi, just a quick post to remind you that there's just a week left before I pick the winner of my giveaway, and as I've now reached the very pleasing round number of 300 followers by GFC that means you're all eligible to enter - international readers too. And thank you all so much for reading, it really means a lot.

The prize is this gorgeous silver and hematite long necklace, with feather - worth £25 and made by Raimonda at Stall 21. As I can't enter my own giveaways I caved and bought one myself while she had her sale on - it came beautifully wrapped and I really love it. Mr FHCS borrowed it as part of his hippy ensemble for the wedding last week, but it also works with a more modern look.

Pictures don't really do it justice, hematite is known as the 'metal' gemstone, and the little beads have a highly polished look and are really tactile.

Anyway, if you already follow my blog by Google Friend Connect then you're halfway entered, the only other thing you need to do is like/follow Stall 21 on Facebook or Twitter and leave a comment saying you've done so. If you do both, then you get two entries. A third if you sign up for their newsletter. If you've done any of these you also get a bonus entry for tweeting the following: "I'm entered to win a gorgeous @stall21 necklace, via @FHCShopping http://tinyurl.com/3oefnmk". If you're not on Twitter, you can get the bonus entry by putting the competition on your sidebar or mentioning it on your blog.

Good luck!

Competition closes August 20th at 10pm. If no response from the winner after 7 days I will re-draw.

Mini makeover project, and a winner...

Hello again, I'm back from my brief visit to Ireland and am straight into the joy that is the school holidays. Anyone else already suffering from a tense nervous headache?  As both boys are at home and requiring entertainment I'd better apologise in advance for my continuing sporadic posts and comments, I will do my best to keep up with everyone though. Can I sneak a laptop into cinema when they're showing Cars2?

So...the project. Scarlett recently mentioned her 'sponge gremlins' who live in her oven and destroy all her cakes, as the reason why she doesn't post recipes. You may have noticed I am not a 'furniture makeover' type of blogger. I'd love to be, really, having seen amazing results people have achieved with nothing more than a torn paperback, tube of glue and chest of drawers. Or a vintage tea-towel, staple-gun and kitchen chair. But I have 'paint fear'. I read all the right blogs and magazines, and have even been known to say blithely to other people "Oh, you could just paint that", but come to my house and you won't yet see one piece of furniture which isn't in its original state (give or take a cushion I might have plonked on it).

I get to thinking about having to sand it, and do base coats, and decide whether I need eggshell or matt or gloss or heritage  paint, and where I'll have to go to buy this, and however many hours it is between coats, and then I remember that I don't have a garage or shed I can do any of this in, but that I do have small children who will harass me in the garden. As a result my brain then slides away from the idea and I go and stick some small portable things together with a glue-gun instead [Not my children. But it is tempting]. However - all this is going to change! Oh yes. And you clever people are going to help me.

Below is my project in its still virgin state. It's a stool with an upholstered seat which opens for storage. It's possibly a piano stool - I have vague memories of keeping music in something similar - or could just be used to stash my current pile of magazines. Or it would be good for storing knitting or needlework supplies. It's a nice solid construction, but I'm not particularly loving the uber 70s brown and orange fabric and the wood is a bit scratched. What would you do? Any hints and tips would be gratefully received, and now I've shown you it I have no excuse not to attempt a makeover!

Soon to be gorgeous stool

Anyway, I also need to announce the winner of my 'Stupid Sock Creatures' giveaway, which I was supposed to do on Sunday. I used a random number generator, which declared the winner to be Lucewoman! [Actually, it first chose my comment, and then Alex, who didn't want to enter, then someone who hadn't told me their crafting disaster - but fourth time lucky!]. Well done Luce - enjoy your sock wrangling!

Finally I also have a rather lovely giveaway running at the moment to win a necklace from Stall 21, not many entries to far so do have a look, I think it's gorgeous.

Lovely hematite and silver necklace with feather

If you'd like the chance to win it then just sign up to the odd bit of news from Stall 21, either by Twitter or email. Or you can simply 'like' their page on Facebook. I follow on Twitter myself, and can confirm she doesn't spam you! See my post here to enter. I may have to buy myself this necklace - there is still 50% off with the code adeleparks until the end of the month.

Lakota x

PS. There's been a lot of discussion recently about bloggers being paid to advertise companies, non-disclosure of review products actually being gifts, and whether a code of ethics is required regarding sponsored posts and the like. I have never been paid to mention any company or any product, just so we're clear. Any competitions I run with a company are because I like the prize and want to be able to offer it. Obviously they get some publicity as a result. [If you want to join future debates they're hosted by AThriftyMrs on Twitter on Tuesdays at 9pm. Use hashtag #blogdebate]

Win a gorgeous necklace from Stall 21 - plus 50% off!

You've probably worked out by now that I love jewellery, so I was really pleased to discover the Stall 21 brand recently and am really taken with many of the items from the current collection. All Stall 21 pieces are designed and handmade in the UK by Raimonda Navickaite using materials such as hematite, amber and Czech glass, and she's kindly offering the stunning necklace below to one follower of my blog.

I love the modern hippy vibe of this long necklace and think it's a really versatile and wearable piece. Not only do you have the chance to win it, but until July 31st you can get a whopping 50% off all purchases, plus free giftwrap and free UK shipping, by using the code adeleparks at the checkout.

Here are some other items which would be in my basket:

Anyway, on to the winning part. Anyone who publicly follows Faith Hope and Charity Shopping will be eligible to enter (UK and international) as long as you leave a comment below stating that you now also:

Follow Stall 21 on Twitter
or
'Like' Stall 21 on Facebook
or
Are signed up to receive the Stall 21 Newsletter

If you do more than one of the above, you get more than one entry, accordingly. Please leave an extra comment for each step. Being a follower and doing one of the above is mandatory, if you additionally mention the giveaway on your blog or tweet the following "I'm entered to win a gorgeous @stall21 necklace, via Faith Hope and Charity Shopping http://tinyurl.com/3oefnmk"
you get an additional chance. Again, please let me know!

I will pick the winner on August 20th. 2011 - if no response is received with 7 days I will redraw.

Disclosure: I have not been paid for this post. Stall 21 are providing the prize to build awareness of the brand. I like the jewellery and like being able to offer prizes to my readers.

Monkey business (and a giveaway)

I'm off to Ireland for a few days, so apropos of nothing and cos I haven't finished any proper posts yet, here's some sock monkeys. I have a half made sock zebra as well, but once I'd made a monkey for each boy and one for my niece I rather lost the will to live - or at least to continue fiddling with tiny pieces of inside out hosiery.

First monkey. He has a wet head due to sweet loving from Boy2

Members of My Chemical Romance hang out at mine

They make quite good gifts for small children, although obviously don't use buttons for eyes if you're going to give one to a baby.

I've noticed I have some new followers too - hello! Anyway, to celebrate followers old and new, I'm having a quick giveaway to see who's paying attention. I have a copy of Stupid Sock Creatures to send to someone, so if you'd like to have a go at making aliens out of your old socks, you just need to be a follower of Faith Hope and Charity Shopping. [Either by Google Friend Connect, so I can see you - or if you're one of the whole 6 by Bloglovin' please let me know!]. Leave a comment under this post telling me about your worst ever making disaster - whether childhood Blue Peter trauma or cake wreck or crochet horror.

I'll draw the winner when I get back on Sunday. Don't worry about retweeting or mentioning on blogs, but if you've literally just joined and this is the first post you've read, well you're welcome to enter too.

Wish me luck in Limerick!
