More stuff to painstakingly pack in a box and then not open for months when we get there...

Despite all my protestations about not buying anything else, as I'll only have to pack it and then find a place for it, I did succumb to the charms of this coffee set recently. Well, it was only £3 for the pot, 3 cups and saucers, 3 side plates, sugar bowl and milk jug. It would have been rude not to, don't you think?

I love the retro pattern and colour, although I haven't been able to find out what it's called. I also realised when I got it home that it reminded me of a print we have by Sally Elford - you can see more of her screen-prints here.

I'm off to see a new school for Boy2 in a minute. Sadly they don't have a place for Boy1 yet, but he's so sweet and eager that it won't be a problem to have him at home for a while. I told him we'd have to do a bit of work together, and he immediately said "I'll make a schedule!". He came back 5 minutes later with a timetable, saying "I've given myself a fun day on Fridays - art and Spanish!". Sadly all I can currently teach him in Spanish is rude words and how to order beer and tapas, but I can't fault his enthusiasm...

  1. Oh I love the coffee set and yes, it would have been rude not too! I don't even drink coffee but I would have!

  2. Ah bless him, that is so sweet. I always learn the rude words and the beer words first. Bet if you look on tinternet you will find Spanish lessons - you could learn how to ask for directions to the hardware store and order belly pork from the butchers together! :)

Bargain coffee set, I have a few bits by the Johnson brothers. Somewhere... xxx

  3. Very much like your coffee set - love that leaf pattern. It would have been madness to leave it behind, never mind rude.

Love little boys - they are adorable. Pity they have to grow up and become men. :)

  4. Only months? When we last moved, we had boxes and stuff wrapped in bubble wrap in our front room for at least a year (I know, I know). They became "part of the furniture", and it was only when a friend visited from Oz and pointed them out to us that we realised it was time to unpack them and find the contents a home.

Lovely coffee set and I love your print. Re Spanish, I had a Spanish dvd for kids. I say "had" because I've been having a cluttter clearout and I may have got rid of it. I'll let you know. xx

  5. Yes Lakota, you couldn't leave that one behind. No way Jose! (does that count as Spanish?!)

I hope you're moving into the house of your dreams, and your boyos, the school of their dreams (if such a thing exists...)
So what's the new house like? I'd love a little sticky-beak.

p.s. Australian Johson Bros is currently all the rage here, but I actually prefer the Emglish stuff.

  6. That was good, getting it for just £3. Charity shops are getting savvy around here and have started calling that stuff 'vintage' (Sue Ryder!) and charging £30 for the privilege. I yearn for the good old days when charity shops were pre Mary Portas... (sigh!) x

  7. My local Barnardos gets very confused and calls Eternal Beaux 'vintage' and charges £30, then actual 60s studio sets they charge £5. Then wonder why some of their stock FLIES off the shelves and other stuff gets binned.

  8. Love the colours in the coffee set - great bargain!

  11. I can order beer in about five different languages - it's an essential skill - be proud. Oh and I'd have paid £3 just for the coffee pot - nicely done.

  12. Language skills, overrated, innit? Don't you just shout at foreigners on holiday and demand tomato sauce with it?
Fab set, I'm always telling myself it'd be a crime to leave a coffee pot behind, hence the reason why I've a shelf full! xxx

  13. Thank you for all the cake making advice yesterday Lakota, it was very useful, I'll have to give the coconut buttercream another go and see if I can make it not look like sick this time.
That coffee set is lovely and three pounds is a real bargain. Pat had the day off work today so we went to one of our old favourite hunting grounds and all the shops there were so expensive now, trying to be upmarket and just being rubbish instead, ah well.
I hope you can get your boys into the same school soon, though I'm sure Boy Number 1 won't be complaining too much if it takes a while. xx

  14. That is lovely coffee set, and it looks great posed in front of that picture. Add the coffee and the color scheme will be complete!

  15. One of the reasons why we're looking to buy our first house is because of all the stuff we have. So while we're saving and running out of room I keep buying stuff anyway. I'm bad lol

  16. I can recommend diego and dora for spanish lessons. Claud calls us dos amigos more often than she calls us mum and dad! Gorge coffee set, love the leaves on the saucers esp. And the colour will be unfailingly cheerful x

  17. 3 pounds? Rude and an insult. That little set of fun was begging you to take it home. Hmm, I had a year of Spanish in school and all I can do is cuss and order beer and food too. Come to think of it, that year of French taught me to say "Shut your mouth"

  18. What an awesome find! Definitely not one to leave behind, you made the right choice ;) x

  19. The coffee set is lovely, and yeah I would've felt rude leaving it there too! Don't feel bad, when we moved here almost 12 years ago, my daughter was just starting to crawl (she talked before she walked little chatterbox), then she was toddling. And I had a brick and mortar shop to run. So things stayed in boxes until I had help with Gwensday. 12 years later, I STILL find things in boxes in the garage that never made it into the house! (Working on that come spring, sick and tired of the junk cluttering the garage AND basement, AND attic!) Aw Boy 1 sounds like a little sweetheart, he wants to spend time with his mum! XXX

  20. Swear words & beer are all you really NEED to know in Spanish ;) x

  21. Even though the charity shops are very reasonably priced here, coffee sets are never priced lower than a tenner. I've seen so many I want, but don't own one! Sounds like I'm dropping hints now.
I think you should p set up a blog for your boy, we can comment on his work and offer him some lessons in our specialties. He'll be miles ahead of his peers!

I was thinking about you when I painted my nails earlier. It's a rare occurrence, but I always wish I could paint my nails like you do!

Hope you have a stress free weekend.

  31. £3?! Wow, makes you wonder why people pay so much for Orla Kiely ceramics! That is a beautiful set, even if it does have to live in a box for a wee while.....

  37. Hi, I recognize the pattern on the saucers- just not certain which relative has it... Meantime I have enjoyed your blog so much that I have nominated you for a Liebster award here http://nanacathydotcom.wordpress.com

  38. I saw a picture on the internet somewhere of your coffee pot and cups but no sign of the lovely leaf pattern saucers. In the plain version it was called Pattern JB869 Johnson bros.

  39. I would have been very rude to leave that behind.

    When do you move? Exciting!

  40. Love the coffee set. Keep trying to sneak one into the house without my OH noticing

  41. Love that your son made his own timetable! Very promising!! Hope it doesn't take too long to sort out schools - move must be imminent now? Best of luck with it x
And I meant to say gorgeous coffee set! Lovely leaf design.

  42. I think ordering beer and tapas is one of the most important skills that anyone can have in life. So lovely to have a little helper. Hope all goes well with the and you get the schools sorted soon.

  43. Gorgeous and only £3 - how could you leave it? The going rate for a vintage teapot is currently £15 in one of my local charity shops and they're nowhere near as lovely as this.

  44. I love this pattern! I used to find it all the time (oh like 20 years ago) in thrift shops but no more- this is high class hipster catnip! I love the set- and the fact that you and not some white belt, skinny jeans and beard wearing Brooklyn born hipster-ee-doodah is enjoying it.

Have a good smooth move, my friend! Wait, that sounded so wrong- smooth and move NOT a good word combo. Well, here's to your move being bump free as can be. Tah-doo.

  45. That tea set was such a bargain, I really like the leaf pattern. I have seen a few sets lately, but told myself I have nowhere to store one ...

Good luck with the move, I hope the whole family are settled in the new house soon xxx
