Ta-dah! Tuesday - 8th birthday Cake

Boy1 has been into cars forever. He spent hours looking out of the window of our flat as a 18month old announcing 'car, car, car, bus, car, four-four (4x4), van, car...'. His first word was 'cah' - with pointing. He became addicted to Formula 1 at the age of three, when Lewis Hamilton won the championship. So I've been wanting to make him an F1 themed cake for a while, but it seemed a shame not to make use of a number shaped 'track'. But he finally turned eight the other week, so I got to make the cake I'd had in my head for a while.

Ta-dah!

As you can probably tell, I'm not a professional cake maker or icing modeller - but they generally look fun and taste good, so the kids are happy with that. I just made two sponge cakes, cut a section off each and pushed them together, used roll out grey fondant for the road, coconut buttercream for the grass, and liquorice allsorts for the finishing line and road markings. A couple of cars stolen from his bedroom and two little cocktail stick flags and it was done. And it was pretty stress free for once - I usually get myself and the kitchen in a right state.

Boy2 turns five next week - just a few days before our big house move - so I'm not sure I'll be similarly zen when it comes to making the requested Angry Birds cake. I'm going to try and schedule a few posts for the next couple of weeks, but we have a ton to do and won't have broadband when we move in, so apologies if I don't get a chance to comment for a while. I will read on my phone though.

What have you achieved this week? Link up your best outfits, finds, makes and bakes below.

  10. Heehee you have a gearhead on your hands.... it takes one to know one! (Except I'm only obsessed with anything that goes fast, and take every advantage I can to appease my need for speed! Go Speed Racer GO!) The cake came out AMAZING! I'm sure your son and his friends were very impressed, it looks so professional! Good luck with the move, I hope it goes smoothly. Remember to try and stay calm, moving can be so stressful. XXX

  15. I'm very impressed. I bet he'll love it. The Angry Birds may prove more of a challenge. My five year old grandson is obsessed with them too. Good Luck with that...in fact have one of my four-leaved clovers that I've Ta-dahed! :)

  18. I think it came out great. Im scared of fondant like I'm scared of birth control. I know it's probably easy to use but I'm too scared to do it. I'm planning on making my daughter a couple of hello kitty cakes for her bday. I saw a cool cake blog with lots of ideas. I still have 5 months till she is 1. Miss you Lakota. I'm pretty much in retirement now but came to say hola.

  19. That cake is awesome, your son is a lucky chappie! (I'm going to have to make something with icing on now...or maybe just some icing! That's acceptable, right!?)

  20. Bloody brilliant! Eight is kind of a between being little and big in school so it's the perfect cake as it looks quite grown up. You are very imaginative and creative with your cakes, I wouldn't even attempt this.
You'll have your work cut out when it gets to double figures.

Hoping the move goes as smoothly as possible, you'll have lots of material for Tuesdays once you're settled and home schooling!

    1. I totally agree. I'm not a big fan of fondant generally and grey is particularly unappealing. The buttercream bit is far nicer. That's why we don't like 'shop cake'!

  37. Fab cake - it looks amazing! My Nan's novelty birthday cakes were a childhood highlight. We'd spend ages poring over the cake book, trying to decide which ones we wanted.

    Hope the move goes well.

  39. That cake looks fab! I always get myself in an enormous stress over birthday cakes too. Its ridiculous really!
Anyway good luck with the move - follow my example and just dump it all in boxes and *deal with it later.
I'll try to join in with a 'ta dah' sometime soon! x

*stick it in the loft and forget about it.

  41. It's brilliant! I have had to give up all sugary baked goods and anything sweet/chocolate like due to discovering I have a sugar intolerance. Thought I was just a grumpy s**t, but turns out it's the sugar making me feel ill and cranky. *sigh* How am I supposed to cope with life now if I can't hide in a packet of Skittles and get lost in a good belgian bun?! Am just going to have to hit the gin hard, fast and loose... xxx

  42. That cake looks amazing, one of my boys turns eight next month so you've definitely got me thinking can I do this. Hope you don't mind me asking a few questions, did you make the coconut buttercream yourself, I made my own once and it was disgustingly bad so I'm nervous to attempt it again. And secondly, I wondered can paintings or drawings go in Ta Dah Tuesday or is it just crafts? I've been thinking I would like to join in. I've written all this and you probably have no internet right now, if so, no worries and I wish you and your family lots of happiness in your new home. xx

  43. Oh no I have missed Ta dah Tuesday again! That cake looks amazing! I always think homemade cakes are the best, they usually taste much better than the shop ones.
