Not many interesting finds recently, I've been doing boring essential shopping for school uniform instead. Much as I hate the fact that
'Back to School' signs are in the shops before they've even broken up, I know from bitter experience that if you leave the buying of new uniform until September then you'll be sending your 7 year old back to class in a bottle green pleated skirt when the required uniform is grey. And your 7 year old is a boy. I am now feeling smug, having also labelled everything, packed gym bags and put it all away.
And I repaired some trousers where the hem was falling down. Domestic goddess or what? This is the first time I've used an iron in about 6 months -
wundaweb, no need to get needles out unnecessarily - prompting Boy2 to comment that
"I thought you were no good at that Mummy". Ironing is one of the few things I allow him to think that Daddies are better at doing. It's ultimately for the benefit of woman kind.
Anyway, finding the wundaweb meant getting the button tin out, which reminded me I found a few more tins which I hadn't photographed. So, here you go:
Toffee tins - Carriage and Birds of Paradise
£1 each
60s Swinging London biscuit tin - now housing my buttons
50p house clearance shop
The toffee tins were also full of buttons when I bought them
These were my favourites - very iron-age couture
Now I've done school related things I need to resist the siren call of the Olympics and sort out the rest of the house. Having children in it rather messes with my usual system of lounging around eating grapes all day.

I'm linking up with Liz's Magpie Monday, pop over and see what everyone else has found. And don't forget my
Ta-dah! Tuesday tomorrow, where you can link up your best achievements, gorgeous outfits, interesting ideas and crafty makes. Or just read everyone else's for inspiration.
Buttons and tins in one blogpost! Be still my beating heart ;-)
ReplyDeleteI've done it, see you tomorrow for taa-dahing and general showing-off x
ReplyDeleteWhy do I never find cute tins full of buttons? I think our local charity shop volunteers have wised up to the value of these things to us thrifty crafters... ;-)
ReplyDeleteTins and buttons. I can't cope!
ReplyDeleteI saw exactly the same Birds of Paradise tin chase up to over thirty quid on eBay recently. I followed it t £2.50!
I'm so glad I'm done with uniform buying. It used to drive me...and the kids to distraction. I had to take chocolate for all of us when it came to getting shoes!
xxxx
A tin of buttons for a £1 is an amazing bargain, and what a treat!
ReplyDeleteI hear what you're saying about being prepared with the school uniforms but I'm waiting this time around as my son is growing about an inch a month at the moment!
Swinging London, LUUURRRVVVVEEEEEE THIS!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAs always your post delighted my sense of humour (bottle green skirt mwhahaha) and eyeballs.
xx
Well done for being organised! I love rummaging through tins of buttons...hope you found some retro gems!
ReplyDeleteHow I love old button tins! That London tin is my favourite!
ReplyDeleteButtons and tins - possibly my 2 most favourite things eva.
ReplyDeleteMind you, a bit miffed you've done all your back to school stuff already. I'm lagging way behind as per.
I'm so very jealous of those old tins! You do get some great bargains round your way! Like a bit iron age chic! x
ReplyDeleteOld tins always make me smile - they are so lovely. especially the carriage tin - just great.
ReplyDeleteAnd you? Supermum!! :)
Enjoy the rest of the hols now.
Hmmmm. I'll comment even though you've sorted the school uniforms out while mine are still festering in the bottom of the washbasket :)
ReplyDeleteI especially like the London tin. The 'Swinging London' logo did it for me. xx
I have a fetish for old buttons, once I found a box full of them and I loved to put my hands in it!
ReplyDeleteThe iron horse ones are beautiful and so your tin boxes, especially the two toffee tins, I really can't decide if I prefer the carriage or the birds one!
Love xxxxx
Ooh I love an old tin, and that Swinging London one is fab! And there is something very satisfying about filling an old tin with buttons!
ReplyDeleteWell done on being so well-organised and sorting the dreaded uniform. I am the sort of useless mother who assumes the kids won't grow so it comes as a major shock when their last year's uniform no longer fits come September... And I always forget where the PE bags are. And the plimsolls NEVER fit. Perhaps I should sort it all out now, that might be a good plan, so thanks for the reminder! xxxxx
An old toffee tin full of buttons is actually my dream vintage find!!!! Excellent work and excellent blog! Just discovered you through Me & My Shadow x
ReplyDeleteAh, love that the tins were full of buttons... bonus! And giggling at the idea of your 7 year old in the green skirt, he could stick a sporran on it and pretend it's a kilt? ;)
ReplyDeleteThat Swinging London tin makes me go weak at the knees with it's utter fabulousness! Those horsey buttons are ace, too!
ReplyDeleteWell done on the rush of domesticity. I reckon you should leave the boys at home with their Grandparents and spend the day in Wetherspoons to celebrate! xxx
Hi Lakota! I am finding I need to come here for my daily laugh. School will be in soon and you can eat grapes again all day. Love the tins!

How I would love to find a fab old tin full of buttons! So glad you are contributing to the greater future of womankind by passing off the ironing to the men. I'm sure if it was a competitive sport, they would embrace it wholeheartedly!
ReplyDeleteI really love old tins. But I collect so much stuff I try and stay away from starting a collection of those too. But then I seen your toffee tins, they are.... rather small.... hmmmm!
ReplyDelete;)
I am so impressed that you have a button tin - and what a cool tin! YES to bringing up boys to think women can't iron and that it's for daddies... And bugger, better look at the trousers this week - the 13 year old has been getting a lot taller recently;) xx
ReplyDeleteOld tins are the best especially with horse buttons.
ReplyDeleteAdore the carriage tin , so pretty.
Your such a good Mommy, ironing is for men.
Besios
Old tins full of vintage buttons -- it seems you've struck a universal chord in all vintage lovers' hearts. Including mine.
ReplyDeleteI hope we'll see those horse buttons on a future Ta-Dah Tuesday project (turned into jewelry perhaps?)
That bird of paradise tin really made my day! It's gorgeous
ReplyDeleteYou've gotta love a button tin, or any tin. Tins in my experience often contain cake so that's always worth searching for.
ReplyDeleteThe Daddy in our house is the expert at ironing too, funny that. ;)
You wrote this just for me! I am glued to the television shouting and cheering with the medal count rising, house badly needing a tidy, husband away and me taking terrible advantage of slobbish out like a teenager! Love tins, and buttons, the two together. ( and what a find that was! Lucky you!) is just heaven!
ReplyDeleteCurse you, predictive text! Of course I meant 'slobbing' ! I can spell really! Serves me right for not proof-reading
ReplyDeletebefore hitting the 'Publish' button!
dammit, now I feel double guilty - am goofing off reading blog posts when I intended to sort out school uniforms today - am v envious of your organisation as I have a pile of uniform (DD starts school next month) and a pile of name tags. Perhaps I should teach her to sew... Sadly, not something that Daddy is any good at either, so it seems its down to me to get on with it...
ReplyDeleteTins full of buttons... that brings back childhood memories!
