I can't have it said that there's no charity shopping on a blog called Faith Hope and Charity Shopping, so whilst second-hand finds have taken a slight back seat to crafting recently, a few bits and pieces have made it over the threshold.
Another cantilevered sewing box - needs some TLC
I need to replace the hinges and reattach the feet and handle, and then it will be a home for all my jewellery making junk. It came with the original contents - wooden reels, various buttons, rusty tins full of pins and some alarming salmon pink stuff called 'hose darn'. [Seriously, you should see it. Thank God for the 21st century and 120 denier black opaques]
Glass coypu? iguana? rabbit jelly mould. I've been after one of these for ages.
It does look a little like an orthopaedic shoe in this photo but it is a rabbit - look at it from the front.

Apparently it's the law that the rabbit MUST be made in red jelly, giving a result rather horrifyingly like the flayed ones you occasionally see at farmers' markets or posh butchers in Chelsea.

ReplyDeleteI like your sewing box - and I love rifling through those old boxes and discovering all the peculiar old goodies they used to have - I have bought a few at auctions and have tins full of weird stuff I'll never use (but no salmon pink hose darn.) When I die whoever goes through my sewing things will be in for a shock. Or the anthropological find of the century.
I have one of those sewing boxes! My mum bought it for me years ago. I'm going to find it tomorrow. You'd think I lived in a mansion the way I lose stuff in this house. It had legs once, (the sewing box, not the mansion) but they've long gone.

You're on a roll today! I've never seen a mold like that. Fascinating! I was trying to think of a color that wouldn't look like a dead bunny. Maybe blue? Of course blue bunnies aren't really appetizing. Can't wait to see what you come up with because you KNOW you have to use it and show us!

ReplyDeleteweirdly I bought one of those cantilever boxes earlier in the week, I need to sort out my sewing stuff. My friend made one of those jelly rabbits a few years ago, it looked perfect when it came out, but then it slowly and almost perversely started to split in half. We all went EEEWWWWWWWWW!!!

That rabbit made from red jelly is both awesome and kind of revolting! We have a brain jelly mould and an anatomical heart one too - never a dull moment in our flat;) I love that coat rack you're going to use for necklaces, I've wanted one for a while, but I just never seen them about.

ReplyDeleteDon't you think the rubbish that you find in the bottom of the grubbiest sewing boxes is facinating.Its always there. In fact, I felt obliged to throw in a whole handful of sewing peculiars into a refurbished sewing box I sold recently. Including a handful of matchbooks from the eighties. Toyed with the idea of chucking in a tuna sandwich but i'm glad i didn't because the lady who bought it from me was very pleasant.
ReplyDeleteMy mum used to have one of them rabbit jelly moulds when i was a kid it was always used for partys pink blamange (sp?) for the rabbit and green jelly for the grass hehe brings back some memories ;)

The wabbit is cute but tell me does the jelly just slip out ir do you have to coat the glass with something? I have a ceramic mould which we turn upside diwn and eat out of like its a bowl cause i cant get the damned jelly out!

ReplyDeleteMy mum has the exact same sewing box. Down to the missing feet, and dubious contents. The only difference is that I'm fairly sure one of the cantilever "things" has also made a bid for freedom.
ReplyDeleteMy sewing box is either an elderly M&S biscuit tin (small box), or an even older flowery metal tin that I was given for volunteering in a charity shop for a few weeks, as they'd had it ages with no interest. I got a tin and a massive stash of aging embroidery silks.
Oh man I'm so jealous of your rabbit glass mould! I've been after one of those for ages too (have found a few at markets but always for a ridiculous price)... excellent find :)
